Laura Winn Kane
holds a BA in Drawing and Painting from the SUNY College at Plattsburgh, NY and a MFA in Painting from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. She has resided in Centre County since 1995 and currently maintains a studio in State College.
The bulk of her work involves oil paintings and pastels of still-life themes as well as
figure drawings from life models. The artist insists on working from life as opposed to
photographs as she finds this method invigorating in both its immediacy and intimacy. Her goal is to investigate the relationships between individual subjects and
their surroundings - sometimes emphasizing the equal importance of these components.
Laura's work has been exhibited and won awards both regionally and nationally. Most
recently, her paintings were included in the prestigious Biennial 2006 at the Southern
Alleghenies Museum of Art in Loretto, PA and the Cooperstown National 2006 in Cooperstown, NY where they won the Windsor & Newton Award for Oil Painting.
